The ocean is an incredible and magical place indeed. It’s been said that we know more about the surface of the moon and outer space than we do about the mysteries of the ocean – and this type of incredible footage proves that the “Big Blue” truly is as fascinating as it is portrayed to be. A group of hungry humpback whales had gathered together off the coast of Alaska to take part in a feeding ritual that’s leaving everyone in awe.
The person operating the drone realized that this feeding frenzy was something people on shore would love to see, and carefully holds the drone right above the ocean’s surface. Thankfully, the operator knew how to operate the equipment well and was able to record the incredible footage without missing a beat! Instead of working for their meals all alone, the massive mammals use their collective abilities to take in a massive amount of food together.
Working in groups can really be beneficial to every member in the end. The Marine Mammal Center explains why this type of group feeding is so good for all of them. These air bubbles trap the smaller organisms in the water nearby and help the other whales eat to their fill. While bubble net feeding is something that happens regularly with schools of humpbacks, it’s rarely caught in such high quality like this!
