Valentine’s Day is a very special day for love birds–and those that want to be–all around the world. But there was a time when everything was a little simpler and it’s good to hear what that was like.
And 93-year-old Tom Sitter wants to do just that. He entered “The Moth StorySLAM” in New York City, a live storytelling contest where contestants are rated by the audience on their performance. His story is about Valentine’s Day 1933 and it is absolutely priceless. From the minute Tom starts, you know he’s going to be funny: “Some of you may find this hard to believe but I wasn’t always this handsome.”
He goes on to explain that in grade school, during the height of the depression, kids could not afford to buy a huge number of Valentine Cards. Tom, for example, bought only five (for 2c!) and tells about the girls he gave them to. In fact, he tells about the whole Valentine’s Day process at a Catholic school in the 1930s.
