We all like a story of someone who has the determination to not only overcome adversity but to excel in multiple areas of their life. Michael Flatley’s is just such a story.
Flatley had been passionate about dancing since he was 11 years old, taking lessons and ultimately working his way to the top at age 17 as the first American to win a World Irish Dance title at the Irish Dancing Championships (in addition to being a Golden Gloves boxer and champion flute player!).
After catching the attention of Ireland’s president, Flatley was invited to create a short dance show that eventually morphed into “Riverdance,” the international dance sensation.
Flatley left Riverdance, however, after disputes with producers–so he decided to create his own show, “Lord of the Dance,” which has become as bid a success as his original Riverdance. Flatley was forced to retire in 2016 due to injuries and chronic pain, but he hand-picked his successor: Cathal Keaney.
Keaney is himself a world-renowned dancer, having won two World Irish Dancing Championships. Here is Flatley’s “Lord of the Dance,” led by Keaney, as seen on the Giovanni Zarella Show in December of 2021.
