Dogs love treats. While some of them beg for treats, the dog in this story pays! Adorable Negro has called the campus of Colombia’s Diversified Technical Education Institute of Monterrey Casanare home for almost five years now. He keeps watch over things as students go about their studies and is a guardian of sorts at the institution.
For his services, Negro is cared for by the school’s faculty. They give him food, water, attention and a safe place to pass the night. But apparently, Negro has decided that anything beyond that is all up to him.
There is a small store on campus where students go to buy stuff on their breaks. Sometimes they buy the dog some cookies sold there. But soon, the pup decided to try buying things for himself.
“He would go to the store and watch the children give money and receive something in exchange,” teacher Angela Garcia Bernal said. “Then one day, spontaneous, he appeared with a leaf in his mouth, wagging his tail and letting it be known that he wanted a cookie.”
Negro ended up inventing his own currency – it was accepted. He got a cookie and the happy dog soon concluded that leaves can buy treats! As you might have expected, trading cookies for leaves became a regular thing for the sweet guy.
“He comes for cookies every day,” Gladys Barreto, a longtime store attendant, said. “He always pays with a leaf. It is his daily purchase.” The smart pooch has been doing this for years now. Staff have made sure he gets treats safe for dogs to eat, and they limit his purchases to just a couple a day.
“When you first see it, you almost want to cry,” Bernal said. “He’s found a way to make himself understood. He’s very intelligent.”
