In the age of the internet, we’ve seen quite a few videos where the wedding party surprises the guests or one spouse surprises the other with something special. Well here’s one that has a little twist on that: the entire congregation surprises the wedding couple with a show of support that literally moves them to tears.
Jaxon and Allison were getting married in the Mayo Hotel, a refurbished historic hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma (and, on a side note, home to Sylvester Stallone’s character in the new Tulsa King TV series on Paramount+). They are on a stairway overlooking one of the beautiful tiled hallways when the priest stops the ceremony and asks them to take a look at all the people who have gathered for them, saying that even in the “for worse” moments, these people will “stand by you.”
At this point, a man in the congregation stands up and sings the first line of Ben E. King’s 1961 classic “Stand by Me.” That song speaks of loyalty and friendship–which is what the congregation appears to be offering to the newlywed couple.
Jaxon and Allison were obviously touched by this outpouring of love and support and neither can hold back the tears. But what made the moment much more poignant to me is that this was clearly not a professional production–these are the friends and family of the couple (even their parents sing) and it’s not a “made for the internet” production. Some of them are not very good and the sound is not great, but there is obviously love and a wellspring of feeling for this new couple.
