Nature has its own way of being weird and exotic, and out of all the places on earth, the sea probably has the most amazing and surprising things to offer.
Unlike other species, male seahorses carry the baby rather than the females, though they don’t make the eggs themselves. The female sets her eggs inside her male’s pouch and he fertilizes the eggs. This pouch regulates temperature, blood flow, and water salinity for the delivery of the baby. Seahorses can deliver from five to more than 1,000 babies at a time, depending on their type.
Here’s an interesting close-up that shows a seahorse actually giving birth to somewhere around 2,000 babies. It’s a wonder of nature you won’t want to miss!
