Donald Gould was a homeless ex-Marine living on the streets of Sarasota, Florida, for over ten years. As part of an arts project, the city put pianos on the streets, hoping people would play. What no one expected was that Donald would step up and become the city’s virtuoso–and an inspiration to everyone.
A woman who happened to be walking by as Donald played an incredible rendition of the Styx classic “Sailing Away” caught it on video and posted it to Facebook. The video quickly went viral, amassing five million views in a matter of days.
Pedestrians stopped to hear him play, more videos were posted and he soon became a bit of a tourist attraction for people to come hear him. Interviews followed, where we learned his name and that he has a son he hasn’t seen in 15 years, following the death of Donald’s wife and the son’s mother.

A while after the original videos of Donald hit the internet, Donald got a makeover from a concerned citizen and, miracle of miracles, his son Donny searched him out and found him on the streets. Watch the video below to see how it played out.
