Some lucky passengers on a dolphin-watching boat in Australia got the most amazing and rare surprise recently. The group was on the waters near Mandurah when they noticed a familiar female dolphin called Squarecut swimming around in a shallow area near the shore.
Mandurah Dolphin Rescue Group volunteers, who were on a nearby boat, had been keeping an eye on her for the past few months and knew she would be giving birth to a baby soon. Luckily, Squarecut chose to deliver her calf in front of an audience. For a while, the dolphin splashed and spun around in the water because of her contractions. Soon, her calf’s tail was visible. After a bit of swimming and pushing, the tiny baby emerged fully. The dolphin watchers couldn’t contain their excitement.
“Dolphins are like our little family here, and so to witness a dolphin birth, it was truly an incredible experience for me,” Robyn Bickell, a dolphin rescue volunteer, said. Squarecut nudged the cute little calf out of the water and then the two splashed alongside each other for several minutes near the boat. The baby’s gender is still unknown, but the rescue team has nicknamed it Pom-Pom.
Squarecut has had a few babies before, but this was the first time people got a chance to observe in person. This event is extremely rare in the wild. Pom-Pom is believed to be the first-ever wild dolphin born on-camera in Australia, and the second in the world.
Bickell, who recorded the hour-long birth, says the first moments between the mother and her baby was unlike any other.”To see this tiny little calf taking its first breath of life was just amazing,” she said. “It’s something I’m never going to forget.”
