Dolphins are one of the most beautiful creatures on the entire planet. They are known not only for their beauty, but also for their intelligence. Like humans, these beautiful blue sea dwellers exhibit empathy and altruism, and they even mourn their dead.
And it’s not just emotional or intellectual traits that prove how intelligent they are – their brains are also quite large. According to research, their brain size compared to their body size is second only to humans.
The video below shows nature at its best – the underwater birth of a dolphin calf. Mama dolphin Bailey gives birth to a new little girl, Reef. This beautiful footage not only shows the birth but also little Reef nursing on her mother, escorted by other dolphins in their pod.
Like humans, dolphins give birth to only one calf at a time. But unlike humans, the baby dolphins are born within 11-12 months. And as soon as they are out in the world, they start to wiggle their fins and swim with their mother. Dolphins give birth by releasing their babies’ tails first, so that they don’t drown accidentally. Mama dolphins provide nourishment and care to their babies for up to 18 months. Dolphins stay with their moms for almost 6 years until they have developed all the skills they need for survival.
The video shows not just the birth, but also mama dolphin and her baby’s first ever swim together. Check it out below and feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
