Bernie and Diane Lierow, who raised five boys, said that they always wanted to adopt a daughter when their children were all grown up. They attended an adoption event with their children. There were many children present, but Diane was curiously drawn to a black-and-white photo of a girl that was pinned to a bulletin board, who supposedly could not attend the event.
When Bernie and Diane tried to find out more about the strange girl, the social workers warned them not to, telling them that the girl was sick and would infect them. The girl had been saved from the worst form of child abuse, but the couple continued to demand information until they were told about the rescue.
Danielle was discovered in 2007 when she was 7 years old and weighed 49 pounds, a weight that caused concern for her well-being. She had been housebound and was unable to speak or respond to the detective’s questions. She lived in a small closet-sized room with garbage all over the place. Cockroaches were crawling all over her body, and cat and dog feces were everywhere. There were diapers piled high and the room reeked.
“I’ve been in law enforcement for 27 years, and this is by far, without a doubt, the worst case of child neglect I’ve ever seen,“ Detective Mark Holste says.
But that’s not the end of the story. Watch the second video here, ten years later, to see what happened to Danielle:
