Swan Lake is a ballet that was composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky in 1875-1876, with a libretto by Vladimir Begichev and Vasily Geltser. The ballet tells the story of Prince Siegfried, who falls in love with a swan princess named Odette. Odette has been cursed by the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart, who turns her and her companions into swans during the day and back into humans at night. The only way to break the curse is for someone to swear eternal fidelity to Odette.
The ballet premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia, in 1877, but it was not well-received by audiences or critics at the time. Tchaikovsky died in 1893, and it wasn’t until after his death that Swan Lake became one of the most popular and beloved ballets in the world.
But I think if the audiences in Tchaikovsky ‘s time had seen this version put on by Karin Baumann and her Chihuahua, Joya, they might have been immediate fans. It’s equal parts adorable and hilarious! Karin is from Bern, Switzerland, and they were competing in the Heelwork to Music category.
This is one of the best performances by a dog you’ll see–and probably one of the only ones to a famous ballet! Watch the full video below and please leave us a Facebook comment to let us know what you thought!
