We love watching child prodigies and this video is no exception. But this 6-year-old’s ability goes from “great” to “crazy” when you realize he can’t see the piano keys.
Avett Ray Maness is not your average 6-year-old kid. He had the potential even most adults cannot dream of having. Learning Queen’s classic “Bohemian Rhapsody” is difficult for any musician because of the drastic changes in tempo and tune–it goes from rock-n-roll to opera and back all in a few minutes.
Avett’s performance is not flawless but it is uncanny for a 6-year-old. But it goes WAY beyond uncanny when you realize he can’t see the music or the piano keys. He had to envision every bit of this 5+ minute song in his head–which keys went with which notes and where they are on the keyboard. As well as memorize all the words!
As you watch Avett, note how he crosses over his hands to play the high notes: that’s something a lot of experience players twice his age can’t do. This is truly an amazing and heartwarming performance.
