Meet Billie Jordan. When this elderly woman found herself recovering from injuries she suffered during an earthquake, she realized how precious life really is. She wanted to change, so she packed up her things and moved to a small island called Waiheke Island. But she had no idea what was coming her way.
As she spoke with the other senior citizens around the area, she realized that they too shared her attitude. That’s when Billie took the initiative and founded the Hip Hop Operation in 2012. Billie was no dance expert, but she stood by her decision of starting the dance crew for the elderly.
She shares, “I thought I would start a dance group, I’m not a dancer at all, I’ve got no idea of how to dance. Anyway, I noticed that they loved it!” So, Billie gathered her senior students, “You’re now a hip hop dance group, this is what hip hop is, and in 8 months’ time you are going to perform at the World Hip Hop Champs.”
The rest is history! After eight months, the crew participated in the Hip Hop World Championships. They are now in the Guinness Book Of World Records as the “oldest dance team in the world”, consisting of 22 senior citizens aged 68 to 95 years old. They prove that age is just a number!
