I used to think that human babies were the cutest thing in the world after puppies, but I think I’ve found a new favorite. Meet Joey, the rehabilitated otter. He had been rescued and had no idea how to swim in the water.
“A lot of people don’t realize it, but swimming doesn’t come naturally to river otter pups,” says Oregon Zoo otter keeper Becca Van Beek. “Their mothers must teach them to swim.”
Before you can swim, you must first understand what it means to become wet. And it’s not something to be afraid of. Joey, on the other hand, dislikes water. Perhaps he had a bad experience with water in the past…
Joey can be seen shrieking and making this amusing little distress call in this video. His handler then lets go of him, allowing him to float. And he’s upset and shrieking about it, but he’s also kind of amazed. Watch his cutest protest here in the video:
