“Shallow” is a song from the 2018 romantic musical drama film “A Star Is Born,” which was directed by Bradley Cooper and stars Cooper and Lady Gaga in the lead roles. The song was written by Lady Gaga, Andrew Wyatt, Anthony Rossomando, and Mark Ronson (of “Uptown Funk” fame). It received critical acclaim upon its release and became a commercial success, topping the charts in several countries.
Musically, “Shallow” is a power ballad that incorporates elements of country and rock music. It has a soaring vocal melody that builds to a powerful chorus. It’s about taking risks, which is why it’s so appropriate for 12-year-old Polly Ivanova singing in this video. It’s a risk for someone her age to attempt a song like this but I have to say, Polly pulls it off.
Polly is a Bulgarian singer who got her big start on Bulgaria’s Got Talent singing Beyonce’s “Listen.” And she’s even more impressive when you understand that English is not her first language and she is not a fluent speaker–she learned the words more as sounds than as words.
